Hi Jyrki69
With DEVILS you guys released (in my opinion) the
best album in the history of 69 EYES (the album
got 9 points (out of 10) at MEDAZZAROCK).
Congratulations!
Any story or deeper meaning behind the
title "Devils"?
As I came up with the title, I was surprised to
found out that NO ONE has used that title for an
album before! But it could really easily have
been a title for any of my favourites from
Misfits to Danzig to Iggy Pop to even Johnny
Cash! And still no one had used it – it sounded
so much like rock’n’roll, so it was a perfect
title for the new 69 Eyes album.
The word "Devils" reminds me a bit of the
word "Elvis"… So I have a good bridge to my next
question… A friend of mine said, you sound very
much like "The King", an Elvis-Sound-a-like who
had some hits a few years ago – something I had
to agree. I guess that’s something you don’t hear
for the first time. Can you deal with this
comparison?
That’s pretty cool thing to come up with! I’ve
always been a huge Elvis fan, that’s where my
musical roots are, and I actually really liked
those two The King albums! I actually think that
The King’s version of Nirvana’s "Come As You Are"
is better than the original…so hell yeah, sounds
very cool to me!
Some years ago some people said you sound a bit
like Peter Steele (Type O Negative)... Now it’s
Elvis (and/or The King)... which comparison do
you prefer?
Elvis means rock’n’roll to me, I’m a rocker.
DEVILS already reached gold in Finland… also like
the previous albums PARIS KILLS, BLESSED BE and
FRAMED IN BLOOD… so how is DEVILS going in other
European countries?
It’s just starting to happen, since the first
single "Lost Boys" and Bam’s cool video for it
comes out this week!
In my opinion, DEVILS is the best album you guys
created so far. There are catchy melodies and
great refrains as far as you can see/listen. Was
it different to write DEVILS than the last one,
PARIS KILLS? How was the songwrting process of
DEVILS?
In "Paris Kills" keyboards and synthesizers were
in the really important role; for this record we
wanted more organic sound and guitar driven
stuff – so even though there’s even strings and
stuff on this album, it’s still more organic,
real instruments and that was important for us.
The album was written basically by me and our
guitarist Bazie this time, arranged by Johnny Lee
Michaels like always. I think one of the
important key factors on it is also that it
sounds more solid album as well, a solid piece
from the first song to the last – maybe this how
it’s written also has something to do with it,
also our main producer Hiili Hiilesmaa cut out
some stuff to get the album as solid as possible.
On HEVIOSO you included some indian rythm
elements. Was this a try to break out of
a "typical style"?
- HEVIOSO has AFRICAN RHYTHMS (Note/Ralph: Ooops,
sorry, thought that was indian style...). HEVIOSO
is an African voodoo god of thunder. I spent a
month in Benin, West Africa to write material for
this album – on "Hevioso" we included some djembe
drumming and vocals of Alfa Kaza, my new rasta
friend from Grand-Popo, Benin. I wanted to
mixture African music with Gothic Rock in that
song, bring some different kind of darkness from
the darkest part of Africa to our music.
When I first listenend to LOST BOYS (track no.5
on DEVILS), this rock/goth-dancefloor smasher
reminded me very much of BILLY IDOL… do you agree?
We wanted to write a song referring to that movie
(The Lost Boys) which had this 80’s Hollywood
glam rock vibe like Nikki Sixx, Slash and Billy
Idol had jammed together…
You guys did a video for LOST BOYS during
Christmas time with Bam Margera. Unfortunately I
didn’t see it until yet… What is the video about?
Any story behind?
Bam’s favourite movie was really The Lost Boys,
so he was a really perfect choice to direct the
video for the song! The video is like a remake of
the movie or maybe the updated version of it…I
think it’s the best Gothic Glam Rock video ever
done!
In Finland you can find many good rock bands in
the charts, even the heavier ones as for example
NIGHTWISH. Any idea why the Finnish people are
more into hard tunes than people from other
countries?
It’s always been like that! Finland just is a
rock’n’roll country, we can’t dance, we ROCK!
Yeah... sounds like that :-) Guess I must be
finish, cause I can't dance, too :-)
NIGHTWISH, THE RASMUS, APOCALYPTICA, HIM and of
course 69 EYES found their way out of the
darkness into the light within the last few
years… is there a NWOFR (new wave of Finnish
rock)?
Hey, that’s the first time I hear this term –
sounds good to me! You can add to this list some
other bands like Negative and Spiha…there’s a
lots of good stuff coming up, and don’t forget
HANOI ROCKS!
Some of these bands also released an album within
these months. Is there some kind of competition
between 69 EYES and the bands mentioned above?
I just flew back home from Stockholm yesterday
with the Rasmus guys who were there too making
their new album…no way really, we’re good friends
and could be really said that I am a fan of all
those bands mentioned above! It’s the spirit of
Helsinki – rock’n’roll!
In an Interview some years ago you said that
PARIS KILLS was the end of some kind of a
trilogy… So what is DEVILS? "Just" a good, solid
rock album or a start of a new "concept"?
It’s a start of a new concept – the next album
will be called ANGELS…
I'm not sure if I should believe this... guess
this is sort of typical dry finish humour? :-)
Let’s go a bit back in time… On 'Blessed Be' you
got a song called 'Brandon Lee', why did you
decide to dedicate a song to him? Was it his
appearance in THE CROW that made you writing this
song?
Brandon Lee is the ultimate gothic symbol, he is
the Crow…the death has a new meaning in that
movie and in him. So it was a perfect metaphora
for a song.
BETTY BLUE, BRANDON LEE, BARBARELLA, LOST BOYS…
are you a movie-maniac?
Yes and an Elvis fan!
Let’s do a short "movie-guide"… we’ll name a few
movies and you tell us what think spontaneously…
VAN HELSING – crap really but some sexy bitches
though!
UNDERWORLD - crap really but some sexy bitches
though!
HELLBOY – haven’t seen yet!
INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE – a classic!
HULK – terrible scheisse, avoid!
BRAM STOKERs DRACULA – a classic!
69 EYES were on tour in January/February 2005
through Europe. Talking about the audience… is
there a difference from Country to Country?
Girls are getting hotter the more there is
Mediterranean blood…
On January 29th the Swedish band GEMINI 5 had the
opening slot, before you guys entered the stage.
Do you choose which bands have the opening slot
or is it more a record company-thing?
We always try to support the bands we really
like. Gemini5 is our favourite glam band these
days and our very good friends too (check them
out!), also on our European tour we had bands
that were our friends are we really liked…
The first 69 EYES-record is BUMP ’n GRIND (1992)…
what do you think about it – after all these
years? Are you still proud of it or is it more
like "let us forget about it.."?
It’s funny glam rock from the early 90’s, it’s
very cool of course – but I think our
compilation "Motor City Resurrection" would be
the best one to listen to our glam roots!
So we reached the end of this interview. Thanx a
lot for taking time and hope to see you guys on
tour!
